5 Fall Lawn Care Tips

Fall is a crucial time of the year for your Evansville, IN lawn. During this time, your grass is absorbing energy, moisture and nutrients to get prepared for a long, dormant winter. Give it some attention and you will be rewarded with a lush, green spring lawn. Just follow these simple tips:

1. Continue to Water and Mow

Compared to summer, your lawn requires less watering due to temperatures being on the cooler side. While the weather is still warm though, watering about twice a week to a depth of 1" is just fine. As the weather begins to cool off, you can gradually decrease your lawn's water intake and eventually stop once the ground begins to freeze.

Don't put that mower away just yet. Continue to mow and once the season comes close to its end, gradually drop the mower’s blade to about 2 1/2". If you cut you grass too long, it will mat and become vulnerable to fungi such as snow mold. Don't forget to keep the one-third rule in mind; as you lower the blade of the mower, do not trim off more than one-third of the grass at any one time.

2. Aerate your Lawn

Aeration is one of the best things you can do for your lawn. It is recommended that Evansville, IN homeowners aerate their lawn once a year. Lawn aerating is the method of perforating the soil with small holes, allowing oxygen, water, and fertilizer to easily reach the grass’s roots which will allow for a healthier and greener lawn.

3. Rake Leaves

We understand raking leaves can be a hassle, but it is best to do it as soon as possible. When you wait, rain and dew can get on the leaves cause them to stick together and form a barrier over your grass. As a result, your grass will suffocate and form disease.

4. Fertilize

Be sure to fertilize in the fall. The reason why is because grass leaves grow slower when the weather begins to cool off but the grass roots continue to grow quickly. Fall fertilizer gives beneficial nutrients for the grass to grow deep roots and have a healthy start next spring.

5. Weed Control

Applying a weed control in the fall will help prevent weeds from returning in the spring. It’s a great time to get a head start on next year's weed control. During the fall-time, weeds are hard at work storing up for the long, dormant winter, which makes them susceptible to treatment.

We hope these 5 fall lawn care tips come in handy for you. Give your yard some attention this fall and you will be rewarded with a healthy, lush spring lawn!
